How to install a DSL Modem

Your DSL Modem is what allows your computer to communicate with the internet.  To install the modem, you are going to need the modem, power cord, ethernet cable and a phone cord.  To install the modem:

  1. Plug in one end of the phone cord to the modem and then plug the other end into your phone jack.
  2. Plug in one end of your ethernet cable to the modem and then plug the other end into your computer.
  3. Plug in the power cord to the modem and to the wall recepticle

Once you have this setup, you are going to need to hook up filters to all of your phones in your house.  These filters will allow you to use your phones without receiving interference from the DSL.

Depending on your DSL provider, they usually provide some sort of install CD that you will run from your computer.  The program will activate your DSL service and most likely walk you through the steps for creating an email account from your provider which will also be your userid and also setup your email program for this new address.

Thank you for explaining in plain English what BellSouth wouldn’t do. They made references to part numbers of which numbers weren’t placed on the outside packaging or on the parts themselves. Very confusing! I had to research the BellSouth FastAccess DSL Welcome Guide to find and identify all the parts to which they were referring to. Also, no mention was made to what the filters did. I guess the CD explains everything. They should give all their customers a rebate with the Geek Squad(Best Buy)and be done with it!

Earl, glad this was helpful to you. I have been installing broadband for customers for many years and the DSL filters seem to be the main problem when DSL doesn’t work.
